New TLC Nursing Home Gets Planning Permission Despite Objections

A new nursing home development in Northwood Santry has got planning permission from Fingal County Council despite objections from one of its most famous neighbours, Ben Dunne's Health and Fitness Centre Northwood. The site of the new nursing home is adjacent to Ben Dunne's successful Gym in Northwood, which most people will be familiar with through Ben's unique radio adds where has a go at his various gym competitors while selling the value of his own gym chain including Northwood.

Ben and Northwood Health and Fitness had objected to the new nursing home on a number of grounds, including transport concerns, the mass and size of the development, parking issues and health and safety concerns.

However after requesting some additional information the Fingal planners decided to grant planning permission to the centre with a number of conditions attached.

The new centre will be spread over a five storey building over a basement car park and will have 84 bedrooms rooms in total (76 Single and 8 Double) as well as housing other facilities such as restaurants, hairdressers treatment and consultancy rooms etc for its guests. TLC who already own and manage a 74 Room nursing home within Northwood will also own and manage the new centre when built.

Mixed Fortunes for Pub Site Proposals

Two Dublin northside pub redevelopment projects have received contrasting planning decisions. Dublin City Council has given the green light for the redevelopment of The Finglas Inn, in Dublin 11, which will mean the addition of 20 apartments and nine duplex homes. However, the council refused a redevelopment on the site of the Swiss Cottage pub at Santry, Dublin 9.

The Swiss Cottage development would have been much bigger. The developers, Swiss Partnership and Kevin Fitzsimons, intended to build 94 apartments and seven commercial units including a new pub, a creche, a takeaway, a bookies and off-licence on the site which also currently accommodates an industrial unit and a house. Many Thanks For Your Responses...

Many thanks to all who responded to the request for information from Carlos Walmsley from Argentina. Carlos’ grandfather was educated in Santry school around 1900 and he wanted to know if this school still exists.

We had many emails saying there was no school in Santry around this time and the school he was talking about may have been Cloghran or Ballymun. We even had some guesses that School House Lane beside the Swiss Cottage may have been the location judging by the name.

Gerry Cooley local historian has indeed confirmed that this was the location. The school was built in 1759 by the Rev Daniel Jackson, it closed in 1928. The building was demolished about 10 years ago, it went onto to be a private house called Burnside. There is a Plaque from the School Building itself set into the wall at the new houses at Burnside.

Again many thanks to all who emailed...
